India’s Undefined Rape Culture
The abduction of a woman especially for a sexual purpose is known as rape. Rape or sexual assault is so common in India for a long time. Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the 2018 annual report of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), 33,356 rape cases were reported across the country, or an average of 91 rapes daily neither the government nor its citizens are doing anything to stop it. Using a small sample survey, Human Rights Watch projects more than 7,200 minors – 1.6 in 100,000 minors – are raped each year in India.
Among these, victims who do report the assaults are alleged to suffer mistreatment and humiliation from the police. Minor girls are trafficked into prostitution in India, thus rape of minors conflates into a lifetime of suffering. It’s now a part of the culture I can say, and every time rather blaming the rapist, the society blames the victim, from past many years in the media we have been hearing some shocking incidents from the northern part of the country, some women were first raped and then burned alive, and such incidents go hand in hand, in the Haryana state of India in ten days ten rapes were registered, and the people of Haryana blame their own girls for that.
The mentality sucks so much that they think that both the victim and the rapist should be punished, they don’t even realise how the victim feels, India’s rape culture is so diverse that from a 2-year-old to an 80-year-old woman, comes in this list. Some days back during the COVID-19 we saw rape cases of patients by the own medical staff, there is no shame to any of the rapists because the society on its own has accepted the culture.
After any rape incident, there are slogans, rallies and talks on the media just for a week and after that everyone remains quiet as if everything is normal, While talking about the punishment, there is no severe punishment in these cases and thus it’s now becoming a part of the culture since the court extends the date and the victim waits years for justice, many cases are not even registered because of the honour they have.
There mentality is so sick that not even education can reform their brains, one of the panchayats came with the solution of child marriage of girls against the raising rapes in the country, the mindset of the people is so poor in some villages that even the young boys blame, the girls either for wearing jeans because they feel that wearing provocative clothes like jeans can invite the attention of men and that leads to rape, the women are controlled, her choices are ignored and she is being always dominated by the male members, they teach this to young and is this any surprise then rape is deemed consensual and India has failed to serve its own daughters.
